Classroom Management:

Classroom management is an important part of learning and ensures our school year runs smoothly. I always teach in a positive manner and I like the children to “get caught” demonstrating the BECS way. Cooperation and good manners should and will be praised verbally and rewarded with stamps, stickers, a phone call and/or occasionally a certificate sent home. Our class has written our classroom rules which they are posted in the classroom. You can also find these rules on your child’s behavior calendar in their homework folder. Occasionally a rule is broken, the consequences are as follows:

1. First verbal discussion on inappropriate behavior - a warning is given and no movement of behavior colored coded card.

2. Second verbal discussion on inappropriate behavior - the student will move their green card to a yellow card. (see behavior calendar also ) The student will also give up some of his/her recess time. During recess the student will be required to fill out a paper stating what rule they chose not to follow, why they did it and how they will make a better choice in the future.

3. Third verbal discussion on inappropriate behavior - the student will move their yellow card to a red card and a detention form will be filled out after school. A phone call will be made home/work to the parents informing you that your child will be staying after school to complete their detention form (see behavior calendar….) This detention form will be signed by the teacher, the student and will be sent home for a parent to sign. Please return the signed paper to me the following school day.

4. A call or email will be made to the parent to discuss continual inappropriate behavior and a behavior ticket will come home for your signature. Together we will devise a new plan of correction.

5. When continual inappropriate behavior or a major offense occurs, a disciplinary referral form will be filled out and the student will visit the Vice-Principal’s office coupled with lost privilege of “Free Dress Up Day” offered at the end of every month.

6. I believe it is unacceptable for someone to keep the teacher from educating students and distracting other students, stopping their education. Thank you for your support in our classroom management plan.

Please reinforce the importance of respectful behavior in school. Respectful and redirected behavior is posted daily in your child’s homework binder. At the end of the day, I stamp their behavior calendar which identifies the color they were on at the end of the day. I do not write the broken rule down in the folder. I like to encourage responsibility and accountability. When the rule is broken, both the child and I discuss what went wrong along with how we could avoid it again and what would be a better choice next time. At the end of the day when I am stamping the calendars, the child and I recall the incident, talk about how we could make a better choice and have a better day tomorrow. Because we have spoken about the incident twice, the children are able to recall and inform you of the incident. The next day, everyone begins back on green.

Character and work ethic grades will derive from the behavior calendar. A grade will be posted every week in each category. Throughout the year, I will be sponsoring incentive programs for individuals, teams and the whole class to receive class rewards. More information on this will be provided at a later date. Some rewards are homework passes, lunch with the teacher, extra computer time and/or sitting at the teacher’s desk for the day to name a few.
