Week 37: May 9, 2011
Our music concert will be this Thursday, May 12th at 1:50 p.m. in the music room. We hope to see you there.
The second grade scrapbook project is quite time-consuming. I do not advise waiting until the last weekend to complete it. Small do-able chunks are advised to ensure happiness and completion.
Please check infinite campus, many students are not turning in assignments and therefore have an "N" as a grade in that subject. There is not much time left to correct this issue. There are many papers in the "No Name bucket...yours might be there."
Week 36: May 2, 2011
Please check the blog for new information. The blog is the easiest way to stay informed with all the happenings in our classroom and at our school.
Several students did not turn in their family tree project and their grade in social studies is reflecting this. Please take a couple of minutes to review infinite campus with your child to confirm all work is completed and graded, missing assignments truly reflect in the overall grade for that subject.

This battle took place in New Mexico during the Civil War and the children and I learned a plethora amount of information pertaining to the Union and Confederate armies. As a bonus, he brought in the children key chains embossed with the logo from the National Guard. Thanks again.
Another huge thank you goes out to the Gallegos family. Mrs. Gallegos brought in oranges, a delicious vegetable tray and pretzals last Monday to go along with our pizza lunch party. The children enjoy the added healthy food to accompany their pizza. Thanks for taking great care of us.

Because of your donation, as well as Avery Day's family bringing in 14 reams...our class has earned the free dress day and pizza party at school on our first day back from spring break...April 4th. It would be extra special if a few families wanted to donate a veggie tray, some fruit, and perhaps a little dessert. I have juice boxes in the room as well as I will take up a count and personally purchase milk for them on this day.
If you want to donate any of these extra food suggestions, please feel free to call me at home so I can organize this. My number is (303) 498-0740. Report cards came home in your child's Friday folder as well as a Spring fundraiser. The fundraiser is an original piece of artwork created by your child. You can order items with the artwork on them (see the information in the envelope.) A portion of the proceeds will go to the school as another small way to raise money for our school.
The next unit in math is on money and more specifically counting back change that is received after purchasing something. This is always a difficult task...any extra help at home "playing store...buying a can a corn from the pantry for $0.78 and paying for it with $1.00...how much money will you get back? Students can either count up or subtract 78 cents from the 1 dollar. Again, the more practice on this concept the better understanding. Thanks.
This is our last quarter of second grade. Unbelieveable! Please always check infinite campus with your child on a weekly basis to double check your child does not have any missing assignments. Missing assignments can play an important part on their grade.

The students and I truly enjoyed the celebrated day of Dr. Seuss on March 2nd. This reading day is encourage and promoted by the National Education Association. "Read Across America" encourages classes across the nation to stop and enjoy taking an adventure through reading books. As a class, we discussed what we already knew and what we wanted to learn about Dr. Seuss himself. Later in the day, during focus time, some students and myself went to the tech lab and researched these specific questions...and much more information about Theodor "Ted" Seuss Geisel. Throughout our busy day, we had special readers such as Ms. Harrell, Ms. Sheldon, Ms. Spare and Ms. Aramburo as well as two of our own classmates put on a puppet show. At the end of the puppet show, our fabulous classmates then asked for their autographs...it was a proud and exciting moment for everyone that day. Please view our pictures under the heading Exploring Learning and Smiling for the Camera.

Have a very blessed Thanksgiving holiday with your loved ones and friends. Enjoy, laugh, share, giggle, relax and celebrate this holiday.
My contribution to giggling is: Why did the turkey not eat dessert? He was already stuffed!

Here's wishing you all my blessings this upcoming year!
Thursday, November 11th is picture day for retakes or students who were absent on previous picture day.

(I'm sorry if I forgot to mention a family's name.)
The children, parents and myself had a fabulous time at our Halloween celebration. It was extra special because the children earned it. Ironically, the students are asking for another opportunity to "build a pilgrim" during the month of November, (just liked the building of Mr. Frankenstein.) What amazing students to raise their own bar.
Spirit week is coming up. Basically here is the breakdown of information:
Monday: Theme is color day: Students wear anything GREEN!
Tuesday: Theme is "A Blast From the Past" Students may wear anything from the past.
Wednesday: No Dress Up Day = School Uniforms
Thursday: Theme is "Favorite Sports Team" Day
Friday: Theme is :Twins, Triplets, etc." Day
Remember, students are not required to participate in daily dress-ups. However, it is not a free-dress day instead. Thank you for your cooperation.
The children and I were very disappointed that we had not earned our Halloween party. We only have three pieces to add to Mr. Frankenstien. We anticipate him being completely built by next Thursday or Friday. I truly would love to have a celebration on either one of these days. If you would like to come in for our celebration, we would love to see you. Mrs. Gallegos has offered to purchase pizza for us on this day. Therefore, the children do not have to bring a lunch...we will eat in our classroom. No worries though, the children and I will be very ecstatic to let you know when Frankenstien is built and what day we will have our party. Thank you for your understanding and patience in this manner.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come and meet with me during parent/teacher conferences. It was very nice to sit down and discuss your child's successes and our new goals for the next marking period.

Whew, our testing has come to a close. Parent Teacher conferences will be held October 25th through 28th. I will send home a sign up sheet shortly for you to request three choices on the time that best suits your family's needs. I would love to have 100% on meeting with the parents of my Rocking Second Graders. I can meet before, during and after school to meet your time frame. We will discuss the results of the testing and your child's progress to date thus far. Thanks!
October is fire safety month. Please discuss with your child two ways to get out of the house if the house is on fire, decide on a meeting place that is away from the fire, discuss the reasons and why you call 911 and last but certainly not least, check the batteries in your smoke alarm. I know these are simply things that your child already knows about....lets be extra safe and talk about them again. Opening up the discussion reiterates the importance and making correct choices to stay safe.
Our second graders will have their hearing and vision tested here at school on Wednesday, October 20th. Our nurse is requesting volunteers for the week of October 18th to assist her with this task. Please call her at 720.685.3297 as soon as possible to sign up. Even a couple of hours would greatly help out. Thank you again for all your help.
Our Harvest Hop is in the evening of October 15th. Our class needs volunteers to work this spectacular event. There is also a contest on which class donates the most candy to be handed out that evening. If you are unable to volunteer for the evening, how about helping the cause and donating candy. Our students will have a safe environment to go around the school and recieve candy that was donated by you! Thank you in advanced. :)
Again, I would love to watch your child demonstrate their talents outside of the classroom. If they play a sport or participate in an activity, please send me their schedule and I will make every attempt to come watch them shine outside our classroom.
In closing, if you should have any questions, concerns or positive comments, please feel free to email or call me at school or at home. My home number is 303.498.0740.
VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Friday is sports day. This Friday, October 1st is an official count day for students in attendance at Bromley East Charter School. It is extremely important for your child to be present all day this Friday. Your child is important and we would like to be able to “count them in our total.” As an encouraging spin, all students are able to wear any favorite sport team jersey or shirt and hat. In addition, if all the students in our class are present, we will have an extra recess. See you on Friday. Together, let’s make a positive difference.
This week, September 27th - Oct. 1st:
FYI: AGAIN, Some students are missing assignments because they are not turning them in. The assignments could be in their desks or sitting in the file labled no name, no credit next to sink in our classroom. Students and parents are welcome to come in after school and review these papers to determine if the assignment is in the no name, no credit file.
Second graders will begin taking their CoGat testing Monday, September 27 through September 29th. Please make sure your child is getting plenty of sleep as well as breakfast on these days. Both a great breakfast and well-rested child will help your child do their best on these days.
